Abstract: »This article is a chronicle of the process of translating Lolita into French in the late 1950s.
Although Vladimir Nabokov had signed the agreement for a French version of his novel (published by Olympia Press in 1955 but then censored in December 1956) as early as February 1956, it is not until April 30th 1959 that Eric Kahane’s translation is released. Why did it take three years to translate this book? A look into Gallimard’s unpublished archives as well as into the correspondence of the major protagonists of this adventure gives us a chance to reconstitute the precise timeline of this publication and to expose the main reasons why issuing this French version of Lolita took so long, i.e. circumstances, the difficulties raised by the novel itself and the personality of Lolita’s creator.« (Source: Miranda)
